Ethereum Codex Pets (ethereum-crypto-pet-shop) is a static Vite gallery of animated pixel-art pets for Codex. The collection is inspired by people who have shaped Ethereum, crypto infrastructure, developer education, security, and onchain culture. It is labeled as an unofficial fan-made set, and every pet page states that there is no affiliation or endorsement.

The gallery lists 45 pets on five shelves: Core Ethereum, Protocols & Apps, Security, DevRel & Education, and Silviculture Society. Each pet has its own share page with a short description, reference links, an animated preview, and its spritesheet. From there a visitor can download the pet as a .codex-pet.zip package, or copy one shell command that downloads the package and unpacks it into ~/.codex/pets, Codex’s local pet folder.

Two Python scripts build the catalog and sync finished pets from the local Codex pet folder into packaged downloads and preview GIFs.

Why the packaging matters

Each pet is a standard Codex pet package: a pet.json manifest and a spritesheet.webp. Hatchling and pet-runtime-oss load the same format, so a pet installed from the gallery can also run as a desktop companion.

Boundaries

The pets are fan art of real people. Named people and organizations have not endorsed the collection, and the rights to the original artwork and packages need review before reuse.

What it showed

  • A gallery is more useful when every item has an install path.
  • Generated assets need provenance, disclaimers, and packaging rules.
  • Drawing real people calls for restraint and clear labeling.

What it sits beside

  • Fan art galleries with strong attribution norms.
  • Game sprite asset packs.
  • Package registries with install commands.
