pet-runtime-oss is the open-source preparation copy of Pet Runtime, a local-first Electron overlay for animated Codex pets. It ships the runtime and tooling only. The app bundles no pets: users add a Codex-compatible package (a pet.json manifest and a spritesheet.webp) or create a starter folder from the first-run helper. The same architecture and release scope appear in Hatchling, which adds two bundled starter pets.

What was removed

The public scope is deliberately smaller than the personal runtime. Its release document lists features that may exist in older local prototypes but are not part of the public version: Telegram or mobile bridges, Claude and other non-Codex adapters, calendar, voice dictation, remote plugin install or a marketplace, general computer control, and shell execution, file reads and writes, screen capture, microphone, camera, and accessibility automation.

It also leaves out personal pets, likeness-based pets, generated spritesheets, and private hatch runs. The release criteria include a source scan for private pet names, local asset paths, and tokens, plus a git dry run that must not pick up private pet folders or build output.

What stayed

  • An always-on-top pet window with click, drag, idle, and menu bar controls, one pet at a time.
  • Package loading, animation maps, prompt generation, install verification, and direction checks.
  • Codex as the only agent integration, observation-first: list recent threads, preview them, and open them in Codex. The defaults do not start Codex work or send replies.
  • Chat through a local model.

The local daemon binds to 127.0.0.1, and every endpoint except the health check requires a bearer token. The file holding that token is private runtime state, not source.

What it showed

  • Open-sourcing is subtraction: removing private context until the public contract is honest.
  • Local runtime files such as bearer tokens are product state, not source.
  • Public docs should state exclusions as clearly as features.

What it sits beside

  • Desktop pet apps.
  • Electron tray and menu bar utilities.
  • Local daemon plus UI companion apps.
