Routelette was a Next.js app for picking a Singapore walk without searching a park database. It uses three slot-machine reels: region (Central, North, North-East, East, West, or South), length (short, medium, or long), and mood (water, dry, nature, or urban). A visitor can lock any reel and roll the others. The app then picks a matching route and shows it on a Leaflet map beside a route card.
The route card lists difficulty, suggested duration, nearest MRT station, highlights, and a link to the official page, plus a Google Maps link for walking directions.
Data
Routes come from two places. A curated set of longer walks, such as the 36 km Coast-to-Coast Trail, is based on NParks pages for island-wide park connector routes, PCN loops, and hiking. The rest are generated by an ingest script from the NParks Tracks dataset on data.gov.sg, which maps walkable tracks across parks and park connectors. Map tiles are from OpenStreetMap and CARTO. Distances, access, and route conditions reflect the source data when it was collected and should be checked before walking.
Status
The standalone app has been retired. This site keeps a showcase of it, with screenshots of a first route, a park in focus, and a roll of the reels.
What it showed
- A public-data app can be small and playful.
- A recommendation interface can be lighter than search: lock a few preferences and let the rest be a surprise.
- Source attribution and data freshness still matter in a playful tool.
What it sits beside
- Random restaurant and place picker apps.
- NParks park finder and official park pages.
- Komoot and AllTrails route discovery.
